Game Story

Brampton, ON – The Worcester Railers’ first road trip came to an abrupt end on Sunday with a blowout loss to the Brampton Beast with a final score of 6-0.

Railers wore white jerseys and the Beast wore Pink specialty jerseys. Unfortunate for the Railers, the last time either team wore specialty jerseys in games against each other the Beast came up on top 7-0, in a Railers home game in which they wore Patriots-themed jerseys back on March 30, 2019. Linus Soderstrom was the starter making 11 saves on 16 shots where Evan Buitenhuis made 13 saves in his relief effort. Railers skaters will have a clean slate with all active streaks coming to an end in the shutout loss.

After a disappointing loss to Brampton last night, it appeared the Railers made the trip back to Worcester after that game with their first shutout loss of the season. They were 0-for-7 on the power play and allowed three power-play goals and a shorthanded goal. Brampton and Railers matched last night’s season-high 66 penalty minutes with 25 penalties on the day.

With a bit of luck, the Beast converted on the penalty kill with JD Dudek turning over the puck at Worcester’s blueline resulting in a 2-on-1 where Matt McLeod scored on a Christopher Clapperton rebound for the only goal of the opening frame at 18:05. Outshooting Brampton 10-5 in that period, was the only time Worcester led in anything on Sunday.

Nathan Todd and Jackson Leef each had power-play goals in the second period within two minutes of each other to start off the period at 2:03 and 4:05. Francois Beauchemin hit the post and bounced in for Brampton’s fourth goal at 11:20 in the period. Lindsay Sparks scored their fifth three minutes later, where Evan Buitenhuis was then put in for the first relief effort of the 2019-20 regular season.

With the game being all but in the books, TJ Melancon scored Brampton’s third power-play goal at 16:10 for Brampton’s second touch down against Worcester in back-to-back seasons. Justin Murray and Nathan Todd exchanged some words with three minutes left in the game, earning them an early shower, bringing the game total of 66 penalty minutes and 25 penalties.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. Alex Dubeau (Brampton) – 27 saves, 1st pro shutout, win
  2. Matt McLeod (Brampton) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  3. TJ Melancon (Brampton) – 1 goal, 2 assists

The Railers end the month of October with a 3-3 record. A growing trend that the team can’t seem to win more than three games in October. They had a 3-2-1 record last season, and a 3-3 record their inaugural season. We’ll see if they can continue their home winning streak as they welcome the Newfoundland Growlers on Friday at 7:05.
