Game Story
Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers met with the Maine Mariners for the thirteenth match of the season on Friday night.
Mitch Gillam was back in net for Worcester after last Sunday’s 7-4 loss to Manchester that saw four goals in the opening 16 minutes. Gillam made 28 saves in his fourth-straight start. Maine’s goaltender Chris Nell made 30 saves in his first win over Worcester as a Mariner. Greg Chase scored twice for Maine. Tyler Mueller scored the only goal for Worcester in the 2-1 overtime loss.
Worcester had a great first period, outshooting Maine 12-9 and scoring the only goal of the first two periods. On a 2-on-1 rush with Josh Holmstrom, Tyler Mueller scored from the left circle on a shot destined for the top right corner of the net at 3:43. Matt Schmalz went off for the game’s first penalty at the 19:39 mark of the period.
Yanick Turcotte brought the fireworks in the second period with his 16th and 17th fighting majors of the season, which were Worcester’s 49th and 50th major penalties of the season. Turcs fought Ryan Ferrill at 5:08, Ferrill could not land a punch as Turcotte had a series of punches for his first win of the night. He fought Derek Pratt at 19:36, sending Pratt to the locker room with blood dripping down his face, Turcotte with the second win after getting the jersey over Pratt’s head as his beatdown continued.
Greg Chase tied things up at 8:08 in the third period, redirecting a Dwyer Tschantz shot to the top of the net. Railers outshot Maine 29-27 heading into overtime.
Railers held control of the puck for most of the overtime period before the team fell back into their own zone to regroup after a line change around the 2:15 mark of the period. Unable to get the puck out of their zone, they turned over the puck, and after a couple of shots, the Mariners took home their 9th win over Worcester with Greg Chase tapping in the game-winner at the three-minute mark.
The Three Stars of the Game were:
- Greg Chase (Maine) – two goals
- Chris Nell (Maine) – 30 saves, win
- Tyler Mueller (Worcester) – one goal
With 70 points in 64 games, the Railers (30-24-6-4) are now tied in points and point percentage with the Manchester Monarchs, but Manchester holds the next tiebreaker with 33 wins, making tomorrow’s game another important one to win in regulation.
The Railers will bus up to Manchester tomorrow to face the Monarchs at 6 PM.
