Game Story
Manchester, NH — The Worcester Railers kicked-off a 3-in-3 weekend with the hour bus trip up to Manchester, where they faced the Monarchs at the SNHU Arena on Friday.
Mitch Gillam made 38 saves and earned his 18th win of the season, fourth straight ECHL win. Ryan MacKinnon was back in the line-up after a brief recall with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, where he was a healthy scratch on their road trip to Toronto. Matt Schmalz also made his return to action after missing about a month and a half with an upper-body injury sustained in a fight against Michael Sdao of the Adirondack Thunder on January 25. Railers did not have a single penalty through sixty minutes.
Manchester outshot Worcester 10-1 through the first five minutes of the period. Worcester’s offense (which caught the late bus up to Manchester) showed up during the period’s only power play. The game was scoreless through twenty, shots 17-7 Manchester.
Kevin Dufour broke the scoreless tie at 3:30 in the second period, netting one past Mitch Gillam for his 22nd of the season. Barry Almeida tied things up a little under three minutes later, netting in a setup by Connor Doherty for his 20th of the season. Shortly after a Josh Holmstrom goal was waved off for a dislodged net, Bo Brauer scored his 8th of the season between the faceoff circles. Dylan Willick brought the lead to 3-1, twenty-five seconds later on his seventh of the season.
Ivan Chukarov around the 11-minute mark of the second period with a lower-body injury. He was able to skate back to the bench after play had stopped. Chukarov returned later in the period but sat the remainder of the period on the bench. He resumed shifts for the third period.
Tyler Barnes scored his 24th of the season at 3:14 on an odd-man rush. Kevin Dufour scored his second of the game with the extra attacker at 14:13. With Willams still pulled, Bo Brauer put the game away with an empty net goal from the blue line.
The Three stars of the game were:
- Mitch Gillam
- Kevin Dufour
- Barry Almeida
Worcester (29-23-5-4) find themselves one point out of a playoff spot.
The weekend continues with the Maine Mariners visiting on Saturday at 7 PM. If all goes well, the Railers could be back in a playoff spot when Manchester comes to town on Sunday.
