Game Story
Allen, TX — The Worcester Railers continued their season-long road trip on Friday with the team’s first-ever game against the Allen Americans.
Evan Buitenhuis got the start for Worcester in their 8:05 start against Allen. Kyle Hayton sat across the ice in Allen’s net for his third straight start. Worcester goals scored by Bo Brauer (3rd), Ivan Kosorenkov (6th), Mike Cornell (4th), Josh Holmstrom (12th), Ryan Hitchcock (10th), Barry Almeida (14th).
The only scoring action of the opening period came at 16:58 in the period by Braylon Shmyr, scoring off a rebound from scoring off a rebound by Gary Steffes. Worcester went 0-for-4 on the power play during the first period, with the period ending in Allen’s favor for goals with 1, and the shots going in Worcester’s favor 19-13, a new franchise record for first-period shots.
Yanick Turcotte picked up his eighth fighting major of the season, dropping the helmet and gloves against Emerson Clark at 8:14 following Curt Gogol running into Buitenhuis which resulted in a power play. Turcotte got into quite the predicament after his jersey got pulled over his head but still got a decent amount of punches in during that bout.
Action picked up in the second frame with back-to-back fights in the middle of the period. Mike Cornell had his seventh fight of the season at 9:48 against Braylon Shmyr, with Shmyr getting a lot of the early punches before coming back and coming back on top. Yanick Turcotte had his ninth fighting major two minutes later against Jacob Doty at 11:55, with Turcotte letting Doty getting most of the punches in hopes of getting him tired he was unable to get a punch in later-on in the fight for his second loss of the night.
For scoring in the second period, Bo Brauer scored his third of the season with a one-timer from Matt Gaudreau which found it’s way under the crossbar at 15:53 from the right circle. It wouldn’t take long for Allen to bounce back with Dante Salituro’s eleventh of the season 58 seconds later from just outside the right circle inside the Railers’ zone. Allen led 2-1 after forty, shots 27-26 Worcester.
A cross-ice pass from Yanick Turcotte to Ivan Kosorenkov would tie the game back up at 3:23 in the second period. Worcester would quickly get their first lead of the game a little under 90 seconds later as Mike Cornell got a shot on a loose puck as he skated into the Americans’ zone, with the puck going top-shelf behind goaltender Kyle Hayton. Railers scored their third straight halfway through the period with Josh Holmstrom catching his own rebound from the left side to extend the lead by two. Ryan Hitchcock scored at 15:18 in the period followed by the Railers’ fifth unanswered goal at 16:56, scored by Barry Almeida off the face-off.
The Three Stars of the Game were:
- Mike Cornell (Worcester) – goal, fight
- Evan Buitenhuis (Worcester) – 32 saves, win
- Gary Steffes (Allen) – four shots, assist
Worcester (23-21-5-3) take fifth place in the north, which was briefly held by Maine earlier in the night with a 4-3 win over Norfolk. Worcester will need to keep up as Maine faces Norfolk again tomorrow and the Royals face Allen on Saturday and Sunday.
Gotta get to Tulsa, First train we can ride: Railers will travel overnight to Tulsa, OK where they’ll face the Tulsa Oilers for the first of two games this weekend on Saturday. Puck drops at 8:05 for that game as well.
