Game Story
Portland, ME — Kicking off their season-long seven-game road trip, the Worcester Railers faced the Maine Mariners on Wednesday for the tenth time this season.
Mitch Gillam started for Worcester, Connor LaCouvee started for Maine in the net opposite of him. Bo Brauer filled in as the team’s sixth defenseman for the Railers on Wednesday as the team waits to unite with recently acquired defenseman Robert Powers. Railers goals scored by Barry Almeida (13th), Ryan Hitchcock (9th), Dylan Willick (6th), Tyler Barnes (21st).
Railers would go on to score four straight before Maine would return with four of their own and skate home with the 5-4 Victory.
Jason Salvaggio scored first, shooting the puck from the left circle and through the pads of Mitch Gillam at 7:25. The Mariners would hold that lead for a short time before Barry Almeida would capitalize on finding the puck (left by Connor LaCouvee) behind the Mariners’ net and wrapping the puck in on an open net. After 20 shots were 18-15 Worcester with the game tied at one.
Alex Vanier fought Terrance Wallin at 14:31, with Vanier getting the majority of action before they spun out on the ice. Dylan Willick scored his first goal in eighteen games, deflecting a shot from Mike Cornell at 15:00. Railers led 3-1 after two periods.
As the second period came to an end, a scrum broke out after Wade Murphy took a shot on goal. Murphy, along with Josh Holmstrom, were issued unsportsmanlike conduct penalties to begin the third period. Worcester would also be given the man advantage as Maine received a too many men call in the mix.
That man advantage wouldn’t go to waste with Tyler Barnes slapping the puck above the pads of Connor LaCouvee and into the top right corner, picking up his 21st goal of the season and extending his goal streak to eight games (his point streak was already extended with the primary assist on Ryan Hitchcock’s goal. Josh Couturier would answer back after four straight Railers goals, shooting the puck over the shoulder of Mitch Gillam from the right circle on a 3-on-1 advantage. Woo Hockey Alum Wade Murphy brought the game to within one with a backhand shot that went just under the crossbar from the crease. Derek Pratt tied it up for Maine, strategically getting a shot from behind the net with the puck bouncing off Gillam and into the net behind him with two minutes left in the third period.
The game would come to a conclusion in overtime with Brycen Martin finding the top right corner of the net on the right side at 2:57.
The Three Stars of the Game were:
- Brycen Martin (Maine) – game-winning goal
- Jason Salvaggio (Maine) – goal, two assists
- Barry Almeida (Worcester) – goal, assist
Worcester Railers (21-20-5-3) are tied with Reading for fifth place in the division with the earned point in the overtime loss.
The Railers will travel to Allen, Texas this week where they’ll face the Allen Americans on Friday before making the trip to Tulsa for games on Saturday and Sunday. Friday’s game has a start time of 8:05 EST, which is due to a time zone difference.

Notes
- Railers Injuries: Connor Doherty, Kyle McKenzie, Matt Schmalz
- Railers Scratches: Malcolm Gould,
- Mariners Injuries: Louie Rowe
- Mariners Scratches: Sean Campbell
- In the hours leading up to the game, the Railers announced on social media that fan favorite Woody Hudson was traded to the Indy Fuel in exchange for defenseman Robert Powers. The trade ultimately comes at a time where the Railers were back to five healthy defensemen and the team was in need of a defenseman and one who can put a few more pucks in the net than the ones they already have. Looking at Powers’ stats he already had better stats this season compared to Hudson and it’s a big plus that he’s a defenseman putting up those stats. Powers can suit up on the blue line as early as Friday against Allen.
- As mentioned on the Pre-Game show, Tommy Panico will require surgery on his hand and will miss the remainder of the season.
