Game Story
Portland, ME — The Worcester Railers were back in action on Friday evening, facing the Maine Mariners on the road after being on holiday break since Sunday.
Mitch Gillam had his fourth straight start for the Railers on Friday. Evan Buitenhuis returned to the team and was dressed as the backup goaltender after taking some personal time away from the team last weekend. Railers wore their regular road white jerseys while the Mariners wore a Nickelodeon “Double Dare” specialty jersey. Matt Gaudreau (6th) and Woody Hudson (4th) scored for Worcester.
Matt Gaudreau broke through a two-on-one to give the Railers the early lead at 6:13 in the first period. Gaudreau managed to break through a few Mariners’ skaters and deked Brandon Halverson at the crease, tapping in the puck on the left side of the net. Woody Hudson scored his fourth goal of the season tipping in a rebound from Matty Gaudreau at the front of the net, which was seven seconds into the first power play of the evening. Hudson’s goal was his first in sixteen games and now has points in back-to-back games. Shots were 14-11 Worcester after one.
Mike Cornell picked up his fifth fighting major of the season against Morgan Adams-Moisan. Cornell stepped up after Adams-Moisan checked Tyler Barnes into the Railers bench (Barnes was no-where near the puck). Both received five minutes for fighting and an additional ten minutes for continuing the altercation. Barnes was in for his next shift and appeared to be unaffected by the dirty check. Morgan Adams-Moisan should’ve received an additional penalty on the play, but was a clear no-call by referee Steven Rouillard. The play can be reviewed by the league if the Railers push for it, which they definitely will.
Five minutes later, Nick Sorkin fought Derek Pratt after Pratt laid a hard hit on Matt Schmalz on his way with the puck into the Mariners zone. The scrap would end up being Sorkin’s first pro fight. Mariners scored their first of the night midway through the second period by Greg Chase. Railers held the lead at 2-1, with the Mariners taking over in shots at 31-22. Mariners had an impressive 20 shots on goal during the middle frame.
Ryan MacKinnon left the game after being speared by Morgan Adams-Moisan in the opening two minutes of the third period. Adams-Moisan was issued a two-minute minor for slashing on another dirty infraction. MacKinnon was back on the ice later in the period. Michael McNicholas tied things up at 14 minutes in the third period. McNicholas slipped the puck between the post and Mitch Gillam on the wraparound, though nothing from the video feed shows it nor did the goal light go on. With the game undecided through sixty minutes, it was headed to overtime.
Mike Cornell sat in the box with 23 seconds remaining in the overtime period after tripping Maine’s Jason Salvaggio. After sixty minutes and the overtime period, we were headed to the shootout.
Ivan Kosorenkov scored the only goal in the shootout for Worcester in the first round. Tommy Kelley and Matt Gaudreau were unsuccessful in the second and third rounds. Ty Ronning couldn’t score for Maine in the first round. Alex Kile scored in the second round, as did Michael McNicholas to put the game away in the third round.
The Worcester Railers (13-13-4-1) stay at .500 with the overtime loss. The two teams face each other again tomorrow evening at the DCU Center in Worcester.
The Three Stars of the Game were:
- Michael McNicholas (Maine) – 1 goal, shootout game-winner
- Ryan Culkin (Maine) – 2 assists
- Matt Gaudreau (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist
