Game Story

Worcester, MA — Closing out the opening quarter of games this December, the Railers and Beast met for the second of two games between the two this week at the DCU Center on Friday. The two teams had a rematch after a 3-2 overtime game on Wednesday that left fans on the edge of their seats until the end.

Evan Buitenhuis made his second-straight start for Worcester with Mitch Gillam still on recall with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Nick Sorkin stole the show with his first goal in a Railers uniform in their win Friday. Barry Almeida (8th) and Matt Gaudreau (5th) scored insurance goals for Worcester, and Alex Vanier had an assist on all three goals scored by Worcester.

Brampton had the opening minutes, getting a power play at 3:27, with a call on Ryan Hitchcock for what would be his first ECHL penalty for tripping. Nick Sorkin picked up his first goal as a Railer at 17:58 in the period with a feed from Josh Holmstrom from the left circle. Josh Holmstrom ringed the post with 7 seconds left in the period with a nice shot from between the circles. Shots were 12-9 Worcester after twenty minutes.

Mike Cornell picked up his 16th minor penalty for a cross-checking call at 12:14 in the second period, Cornell now has the most minor penalties of anyone in the ECHL. Worcester still held their one-goal lead with the middle period in the books, Railers outshooting the Beast 21-19.

Matt Gaudreau scored an insurance goal for Worcester, nailing the top right corner off a rebound from Nick Sorkin. Brampton got back to within one with a goal from Erik Bradford at 14:20 in the third. Barry Almeida put the game away with the goal on the empty net with 1:09 left in regulation.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. Nick Sorkin – 1 goal, 1 assist
  2. Matt Gaudreau – 1 Goal
  3. Alex Vanier –  3 assists

Railers’ record is now 10-10-3-0 (23 pts) on the season and they are now .500 for the first time in a while. They are now tied with Brampton and Maine for fourth place in the north division.

There must be something more than this: With this Saturday off, the Railers will pick things back up on Sunday, where they’ll travel to Portland to take on the Maine Mariners at 3 PM. Nonna’s at the Worcester Ice Center will be hosting a viewing party for Sunday’s away game, so stop on by to catch the game and a bite to eat.
