Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Manchester Monarchs made their first trip to Worcester to take-on the Railers for the first time this season on Friday. The Railers, coming off a hot-stretch of games, wore specialty jerseys based on Marvel’s Black Panther. Manchester cut Worcester’s 4-game point streak on Friday with a score of 4-2.

Mitch Gillam made his return to the lineup after missing two weeks with a head injury, sustained on November 7 against the Newfoundland Growlers. Gillam was dressed as the backup with Evan Buitenhuis getting the start for Worcester.

Nic Pierog got things rolling early for Manchester, finding the net on a bounce through the pads of Evan Buitenhuis. Connor Doherty and Eric Schurhamer had a scrap mid-way through the period that was all Doherty. Shots were 11-6 Worcester, with Manchester scoring the only goal in the opening frame.

Barry Almeida tied it with his fifth of the season at 9:18 in the second. Manchester regained the lead with Nic Pierog scoring his second of the night with Top-Shelf shot from the left circle. Manchester led through forty minutes, with Worcester having the upper hand in shots, 26-15.

Railers it back up to begin the third period, with Barry Almeida getting a straight shot on the bottom right corner of the net, shot from the left circle. Monarchs would go on to score two unanswered goals, one by Cory Ward and another by Zeb Knutson. Railers would go three and a half minutes without registering a shot on goal to end the game, with a score of 4-2 Manchester.

Announced postgame, the three stars of the game were:

  1. Cole Kehler (Manchester) – 36 saves, win
  2. Barry Almeida (Worcester) – 2 goals
  3. Nic Pierog (Manchester) – 2 goals

Oh, Canada: The Railers will hit the road for Brampton, Ontario this weekend to take on the Brampton Beast on Sunday at 2 PM and Tuesday at 11 PM.

Notes

  • Railers Scratches: Tommy Kelley (14-day IR), Malcolm Gould (14-day IR), Yanick Turcotte (14-day IR), Ryan MacKinnon, Alex Vanier.
  • Railers wore specialty jerseys with a Marvel Black Panther design on Friday. With the loss, they are now 7-2 when wearing a specialty jersey.
  • Ryan Hitchcock picked up his first ECHL points with two assists in the game.
  • Mitch Gillam was activated from injured reserve on Thursday and Charlie Millen was released on Wednesday. After speaking with Gillam during Monday’s member event, it was revealed that he sustained a concussion on November 7 against Newfoundland. Gillam had practiced with the team for about a week before coming off of injured reserve.
  • Speaking of injured reserve, Malcolm Gould was placed on injured reserve earlier this week in a transaction retroactive to November 12. Gould hasn’t played in a game yet this season and is presumably still recovering from a jaw injury sustained before the season began. Gould can be activated on Monday, November 26, and the earliest he can make his Railers debut will be Tuesday, November 27 at Brampton.
  • Ivan Kosorenkov received his first recall to the San Jose Barracuda on Tuesday. His future with Worcester is yet to be seen as his recall has just happened. The Railers still hold his ECHL rights so in any case, a deal may be worked out with another ECHL team for his rights in exchange for another player. As the San Jose organization currently does not have an official affiliation with an ECHL team, that could be any team, but they have sent a few players to the Orlando Solar Bears this season so they could be on the list of possible trade targets. Kosorenkov played a crucial role in turning things around for the Railers in the past two weeks, producing five points in eight games.
