Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers hosted the Brampton Beast for first of two home games this week on Wednesday. It was the first of four games between the Railers and Beast that will be held at the DCU Center this season, and the second of twelve division match-ups the Railers will face this month.

It was Evan Buitenhuis getting the start for Worcester, making his second start in six games. Mitch Gillam was recalled to Bridgeport prior to Wednesday’s game. Ryan Hubbard was signed to a PTO prior to the game and was dressed as the back-up for the Railers. Tyler Barnes extended his point streak to three games, and Ryan Hitchcock extended his point streak to four in Worcester’s 3-2 loss.

Brandon Marino scored first for Manchester, getting an early opportunity on the open net of Evan Buitenhuis. Tyler Barnes tied it after being tied up with two Brampton skaters, managing to get a shot to the left of goaltender Michael McNiven. Shots were 13-11 Brampton after twenty minutes with the score tied at one.

Score remained tied through the second period. Railers had two successful penalty kills and three unsuccessful power plays. They found the net on one of the power plays but was called off after a video review showed it went in off the skate of a Railers forward. Brampton had the only edge with shots being 23-22 in their favor after two periods.

Anthony Beauregard gave Brampton their second lead of the night at 13:39. Barnes once again tied the game up, this time with 5 seconds left and Buitenhuis pulled for the extra attacker. Shots were 30-29 Brampton with the game heading into overtime.

Erik Bradford put the game away at the two-minute mark in the overtime period, narrowly slipping the puck between Buitenhuis and the right goal post.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Erik Bradford (Brampton)
  2. Michael McNiven (Brampton)
  3. Tyler Barnes (Worcester)

With the overtime loss on Wednesday, the Railers are now 9-10-3-0 (21 pts) through 22 games with 54 games left in the season. Railers are now ranked fifth in the north division with a tie with the Maine Mariners.

Gotta Get Down on Friday: Railers and Beast return to the DCU Center on Friday. Boston Bruins forward Ryan Donato will be in attendance and signing autographs from 6:00 to 7:30 on the concourse. Notes

  • Railers Injuries: Malcolm Gould, Tommy Kelley, Kyle McKenzie
  • Railers Scratches: Nick Bligh, Woody Hudson, Tommy Panico
  • Mitch Gillam was received his second recall to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Wednesday morning. Gillam’s recall wasn’t related to last week’s stellar performances but was recalled to replace Christopher Gibson who received the recall to the Islanders. Robin Lehner “tweaked” something and is considered day-to-day. Gillam’s return to Worcester could come as early as Friday, though it is more likely to be Sunday at Maine. This status is, of course, all depending on when Christopher Gibson gets re-assigned to Bridgeport, which ultimately depends on Robin Lehner’s status with the Isles. An announcement on a re-assignment is usually announced around 9 or 10 in the morning, so stick with our social media accounts for the latest.
  • Ivan Kosorenkov was reassigned back to Worcester on Monday. His reassignment comes as no real surprise as he played in just one game for the San Jose Barracuda. Kosorenkov should be staying put unless anything major happens over in San Jose or Kosorenkov does something groundbreaking in Worcester. One would assume that the Barracuda wouldn’t want to waste a few days transporting a player as they did throughout the Sharks’ tenure in Worcester.
  • The ECHL announced on Tuesday that Mitch Gillam was the goaltender of the week for the week of November 26 through December 2. Gillam went 3-0-0 with a 1.64 goals-against average and a save percentage of .951 in three appearances last week. It is the second time in his career that he has received the honor, in addition to being named to the All-Rookie team last season.
  • Ryan Hitchcock was nominated for Player of the Week for the week of November 26 through December 2, with a goal in two assists through two games. Hitchcock also had a +2 rating and ten shots.
